Extension privacy policy
Last updated: October 6, 2026. This policy covers the TrueAsk browser extension. The website and its waitlist are covered by our website privacy notice.
In short
- The extension reads a listing only when you ask it to, and only the item's details.
- It never reads the seller's name, profile, photo, precise location or messages, and never your browsing history.
- You don't create an account, and we don't know who you are.
- We never sell your information.
Who we are
TrueAsk is operated by Louis-Olivier Deschênes, Carignan, Quebec, Canada, who is also the person in charge of protecting personal information. Contact: tynor334@gmail.com.
What the extension reads
When you click the extension's icon, or ask the open panel to check a listing, it reads the listing in your current tab: its title, price, condition, category, description and how long ago it was posted. Phone numbers and email addresses are removed from the text before anything leaves your browser.
What it sends to our server
- The item details above.
- A random installation ID, created when you install the extension. It lets us apply the free daily limit without an account.
It does not send the listing's web address, your Facebook account, or anything about the seller.
What we keep
- Daily limit counters: a scrambled (hashed) version of your installation ID and how many checks it made each day. Deleted after 30 days.
- Cost log: one line per check, with the hashed installation ID, the market (US or Canada), which AI models ran, their usage and cost. It contains no listing text. Deleted after 12 months.
- Item identification cache: what the AI recognized (for example brand, model, condition, included accessories and defects mentioned), stored under a fingerprint of the listing text so that checking the same listing again is faster. It is not linked to your installation ID. Deleted after 30 days.
- eBay results cache: the eBay listings found for a search. Deleted after 5 hours.
We do not store your IP address. To prevent abuse, a scrambled (hashed) version of it is used for about a minute to limit how many checks can be made in a short time, then discarded.
Who else receives data
- Anthropic (Claude API) receives the item details to identify the item and review comparable eBay listings. Under Anthropic's commercial terms, this data is not used to train its models, and it is deleted within 30 days unless it is flagged for a usage policy violation or the law requires keeping it.
- eBay receives the search words for the item (for example "Nintendo Switch OLED"), not your information.
- Cloudflare hosts our server and processes technical request data to operate and protect it.
- The Bank of Canada provides the US-to-Canadian dollar exchange rate. We send it no information about you.
These providers may process data outside Quebec and Canada, including in the United States.
Links to eBay
The panel links to eBay listings. Some of these may be affiliate links: if you click one and buy on eBay, we may earn a commission, at no cost to you. The panel says so next to those links. When you open eBay, eBay's own privacy notice applies, and eBay may use cookies to credit the commission. The reports we receive from eBay's affiliate program do not include your name or your eBay account.
What stays in your browser
The extension stores your installation ID and your market choice (US or Canada) in your browser's extension storage. Uninstalling the extension deletes them.
Permissions
- activeTab and scripting: read the listing in the current tab after you click the icon.
- sidePanel: show the results in Chrome's side panel.
- storage: keep your installation ID and market choice.
- Optional, Marketplace pages: only if you allow it, the open panel can check a new listing without you clicking the icon again. It still reads a listing only when you ask.
Your rights
You can ask us to see, correct or delete your information at any time by writing to the contact above. Because we don't know who you are, we may need your installation ID to find records linked to it. Uninstalling the extension removes the ID from your browser, and our records tied to it are deleted on the schedule above.
Children
TrueAsk is not intended for children under 13.
Changes
If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top. Significant changes will also be announced in the extension's store listing.
